A tie of two in form sides was the order of the day at the Reg Madgewick Stadium as the Hammers welcomed Deportivo Galicia fresh from both teams winning against Premier Division opposition on Tuesday night. James King came through a late fitness test to resume his partnership with Weighill at the back.
The game began with the visitors seeing plenty of the ball and looking to get their quick wingers away. Thurgood went close with a half chance before Lee Norman in the Cobham goal bravely cut out a loose ball in the box at the expense of a heavy collision with a Galician forward. Although he struggled on for a while, a long reach during a penalty box scramble proved too much and last weeks second half goalscorer Harry Walker donned the gloves as a makeshift keeper. As it transpired, Walker was anything but makeshift and looked assured with the ball in both his hands and at his feet.
On 24 minutes, Mbu picked the ball up on the half way line, before beating his man and cutting in to slot a curling effort inside the far post to open the scoring.
Chris Davis continued his rich vein of form as on 40 minutes, a diagonal pass from Weighill found Davis in space who as quickly as he brought the ball under control, had dispatched a neat finish to make it 2-0.
The passionate Galicians then allowed emotion to over flow as the visiting left back was shown red for raising a hand to the head of Davis just before half time.
With ten men, Galicia continued to try and play from deep areas and use the width of the pitch, but with the extra man, Cobham were now able to find spaces and Mbu found Thurgood with a low cross for the number 9 to slot home at the near post on 61 minutes. That goal seemed to seal the result, and whilst never giving up, Walker was rarely troubled in the home goal.
Again, good work from Mbu, this time on the right saw his cross find Thurgood for his second of the game bundling home in amongst a Galicia defender.
Not to be outdone, it was Davis' turn again on 69 minutes, again, good work from Mbu saw Davis able to deftly flick the ball in to the far corner to make it 5-0.
The game played out in the fashion that had preceded with both teams still looking to play and duel, but with the scoreline and player advantage, Cobham were able to see out the clean sheet.
Deportivo Galicia played some nice football and have a good group of players and staff. They'll bounce back and be there in the mix come the end of the season.
